Waste-Free Carpet Dust/Deodorizer

Unfortunately our entire condo is carpeted, and with dogs things can get pretty STANKY if we don’t keep on top of the vacuuming. I used to love purchasing seasonally scented “carpet dust” to keep our carpets fresh. BUT, because carpet dust comes in plastic containers, each costing around $2-4 and filled with extra chemicals, I have long since stopped buying it. We still vacuum often, but it’s just not the same without the fresh burst of….vacuum/carpet dust. So today I decided to make my own! 20150530_133700_resized

Since I have been using so much of this stuff for cleaners, toothpaste, laundry, and cooking, we started buying the 13.5lb. bags of Baking Soda from Costco. ONLY $4!!!!!!! AMAZING! So I whipped up a quick batch of carpet freshener/dust using just baking soda and essential oil. Also, be sure to take advantage of one of those recycled jars you’ve been hoarding….because jars!

Again, what you will need:

  • jar
  • baking soda
  • essential oil of your choice (today I used Eucalyptus)

What I did:

  1. Filled jar with baking soda
  2. Dropped 10 drops of essential oil into the baking soda
  3. Close lid and then shake mixture well
  4. Use a knife to punch holes in the top of your jar’s lid. **I have tons of lids, because I have used jars for things without the lids (flower vases, etc.) so I was able to secure the lid with holes to the jar for storage using a rubber band, and then keep a lid without holes on the jar to keep the powder fresh, dust free and with the scent intact for each use.

Now you are ready to sprinkle your carpet dust on your carpets! I recommend letting the dust sit for 10-15 minutes in order to maximum freshness. You can leave it longer if your pets don’t mind it.
